ode aan MILAN a.k.a. Max Power

So I got this fifteen year old Toyota Camry from Rent a Wreck. It's got nearly 250k miles under it's belt and well it has some dents and knicks. But nothing too serious. Ok so you could only unlock it from the passenger side, the trunk didn't pop and most of the windows didn't work. But hey it was alot cheaper then Avis or Hertz and most importantly the engine seemed to work just fine.

Well I'd been bopping around town in this puppy for about a week when it started to have some issues. The day before I was supposed to return it, of all times. It wouldn't start right away anymore and the engine was overheating. I called Rent a Wreck that the car was in problem and that I'd probably needed a replacement. They wouldn't have any of it. The next day (monday) I could get a replacement. But that was no good for me I argued. I was going to return the car then. Nope, they still wouldn't have any of it. They told me to try not to drive it. Well that's just fucking great I thought. I'm somewhere in Culver City and I need to be all the way up to Van Nuys to get home.

I needed to get home, but it looked like the car really didn't want to start anymore. Finally after about 10 tries I finally got it running again. Sort of. It was making all kinds of noises now. But it was running so I head up the highway going north...

...but it really isn't running smooth anymore at all. Pedal to the metal it wont even do more then 40mph anymore on the freeway.

When I reach the 405/101 freeway split I really don't trust it anymore. I'm only a few exits from home but the overheating indicator is now so high up it's literally off the scale.

I stop over at the first exit and as soon as I stop all the electricity dies, the automatic dies and instantly smoke starts coming up from under the hood...

...I get out thinking the car is only just overheating.

Wait a few minutes and it will probably all be fine again.

Only then the car starts developing serious amounts of smoke coming from under the hood...

...so I figured it might be smart to take my belonings out of the car...

...now the car starts developing even MORE smoke and I'm starting to think something might be seriously wrong.

By now my phone is dead though. Lucky enough for me a triple A truck pulls up. He has a whole different view on this situation...

...Where I'm still under the impression my car is merely overheating the Triple A guy immediartly jumps out with a fire extinguisher and is yelling at me. "POP THE TRUNK! POP THE TRUNK! THIS CAR IS ON FIRE!"

As I pop the trunk the Triple A guy immediatly closes it again. The whole fucking engine is already on fire. He runs back in his trucks, tells me - shouts at me more like - to "CALL 911" as he's 'going to get more help.'

Sticking me with a car on fire and no phone to call 911 with...great...

...by then it becomes pretty obvious the car actually is on fire. There's flames everywhere now!

And no Police or Fire Department to be seen anywhere....

...by now the tires are beginning to melt and pop aswell, pretty spetacular sight...

...finally the police pop around...

...and the fire department...

...they don't seem to be in much of a hurry though...

...first they look at it for a bit...

...look at it some more...

...might aswell get a picture in then...

...and their started!...

...I dont think I'll drink the rest of my 711 Gulpy now. Everything's soaked in foamy stuff! Yummy...

...and that's what the car looked like in the end...

...needless to say it was now total loss!

Well done Max Power. And this time it wasn't even my fault!

Not really how I expected to spend my sunday afternoon.
